HD Video, Digital Photographs & Text, 2011. The Unnameable began with story I wrote of a Boy who grows up feeding an invisible Elephant in his room. His psyche splits as he attempts to imagine life without the Elephant and we follow him through his imagination, in out of his consciousness. The project was based on the psychological experience of dissociation (leaving one’s emotional or physical reality), drawing on myths and rituals in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The experience of dissociation temporarily removes the viewer from their ego-self, and involves a re-appraisal of their reality. The title is a reference to both H.P Lovecraft and Samuel Beckett’s “Unnamables,” stories that melt in and out of reality and psychosis. The Unnameable was filmed on location in France and in an abandoned nursery for disabled children in London. |
